What to Do If You See Someone Being Bullied

Most people are uncomfortable when they see someone being bullied. They often feel guilty because they want to intervene but don’t want the bully to begin targeting or tormenting them. According to i-Safe America’s “Cyber Bullying: Statistics and Tips,” if you see someone being bullied:

Refuse to join in. It can be hard, but do your best to resist the bully’s efforts to get you to tease or torment someone.

If you can, try to defuse the situation. Try to draw attention away from the person being targeted. If you know the bully, perhaps you can take him aside and ask him to leave the victim alone. However, don’t place yourself at risk.

Get help. Ask a teacher, parent, or other responsible adult to come and help immediately.

Offer support to bullied teens. Help them up if they have been tripped or knocked down. If you believe you can’t do this safely at the time, give words of kindness or condolence later to those who have been hurt.

Encourage the victims to talk with an adult. Offer to go along if it would help. If the victim of a bully is unwilling to report the incident, tell an adult yourself. (If necessary for your safety, do this anonymously.)
